5 Unconventional Kitchen Table Ideas

Kitchen tables are a key element of your home. Not only do they offer practical benefits, but they’re also integral to the overall room design. So, you need to think long and hard before purchasing your kitchen table. It has to fit the room, it needs to stand out, but it also must be functional!

You’ve probably seen a lot of traditional kitchen tables that all look the same or follow a similar design pattern. Why don’t you opt for something a little bit different instead? Here are a few unconventional kitchen table ideas that we’ve fallen in love with:

1. Replace Chairs with a Bench

Most of us have a kitchen table and a set of chairs. This is the most traditional way to do things, but what if you made one slight change that totally altered the way the kitchen table looks? Get rid of the chairs on one side and slide in a long bench. Right away, the look of the table has changed. It feels more contemporary, more open – there’s almost a picnic table feel to it.

The best thing about benches is that they come in so many varieties and can help improve the overall design and functionality of your kitchen. Plus, the color of the benches changes from design to design, so you can choose a bench that fits your unique design taste.

2. Make Your Kitchen Table a Statement Piece

Your kitchen table is the center of focus in one of the busiest spaces in your home. Essentially, your kitchen table presents the perfect opportunity to add a statement piece into a space that usually doesn’t scream personality.

Transform your kitchen table by painting it a new color, so it stands out from everything else.

What color should you choose? It depends on the other color choices in your kitchen – you want it to stand out, but you don’t want it to look completely out of place.

Our suggestions are to go for either a really bright or really dark color.

Of course, if you wanted to go out and buy something new, then you could opt for an oversized kitchen table – or one that’s naturally a different color.

Large kitchen tables are statement makers in and of themselves, so try and get one that’s about as big as you can realistically fit in your kitchen. Just make sure there’s still ample room to move around, and that the table doesn’t drown out the rest of the room.

3. Get a Swing Table

If you’re really looking to switch things up, then you should think about installing a swing table. These are starting to become popular in homes that have a modern-industrial aesthetic.

With a swing table, the table itself is surrounded by a large frame that extends above it. Then, the chairs are attached to the frame by a series of chains or ropes. There are no chair legs – they hover above the ground, like a swing.

Effectively, you’re sitting in a swing while at your kitchen table! It’s pretty crazy, but at least you don’t have to worry about falling backward when swinging on your chair. These tables are amazingly unique, and they most certainly make your kitchen look very modern and on-trend.

4. Use a Combination of Different Chairs

Swapping your chairs out for a bench isn’t the only way you can mix up the seating. We find that using a combination of different chairs can give your kitchen table a truly unique look.

As we said, most of us have a kitchen table with a collection of identical chairs. Everything matches perfectly, and there’s nothing technically wrong with this. But, if you want to do something different, then think about swapping some of the chairs out for others that have a different design or color.

A simple idea is to take the two chairs at the ends of the table and replace them with something new. We suggest having two chairs at each end that are highback in their design. The rest of the chairs can have a low-back design, which creates a nice juxtaposition. You’ve only changed two chairs, but the difference this makes is crazy.

5. Utilize Kitchen Table Storage Space

Finally, you should think about getting a table that gives you some added storage space. This is a brilliant idea for minimalists who want to try and keep their homes clutter-free. Also, it’s wonderful if you don’t have much cabinet space and could do with some extra storage.

Kitchen table storage comes in many forms; some tables have drawers by each position that you can store tablemats, cutlery, and coasters in. Others have storage built underneath the table, these built-ins are large enough to keep plates, kitchen towels, and who knows what else. Usually, storage tables come with unique designs, which is another reason to consider them!

We particularly like this idea, as it makes it easier for you to set the table up before meals and frees up cabinet space.

Do you want to show your kitchen some love? Turn your attention to the kitchen table and think about how you can improve it. It’s good to stray from the norm and avoid following the same traditional design ideas. Try something different, and you’ll be amazed by the results.

  1. First off I would like to say excellent blog! I had
a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you do not mind.

I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing.
I’ve had a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting
my thoughts out there. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15
minutes are generally wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints?
