You love spending time outdoors, but your patio or deck is hard and uncomfortable. Dare you say, it’s even a little drab out there. You want to spruce it up, but you’re just not quite sure how to do it. For a new touch to your outdoor space, consider adding some outdoor carpet.

What is Outdoor Carpet?

Outdoor carpet is exactly what it says it is: carpet that can be used outdoors. It is often sold as indoor/outdoor carpet, and can be used on decks (including pool decks), patios, walkways and even sunrooms. It can even be used on boats. Made completely of synthetic materials, it is sturdy and weather resistant, and available in a wide variety of colors and styles.

What is Outdoor Carpet Made Of?

Outdoor carpet is made totally of synthetic materials. Polypropylene is the most common material. Others may be made from olefin fibers, acrylic or plastic. Most outdoor carpet is UV treated, so it won’t easily fade in sunlight. It is also water resistant, so it will usually dry without leaving a lingering scent.

Why Use Outdoor Carpet?

Outdoor carpet brings function and style to your outdoor living space, and adds a touch of color and interest to your otherwise drab or dreary concrete. With a wide selection of colors and patterns, outdoor carpet works well with your current outdoor furniture. If you are looking to purchase new furniture, you are sure to find a set that matches your choice of outdoor carpet. You can find just about any color or pattern available, you can find things from needle punch carpets to artificial grass.

Outdoor carpet provides your feet with a clean, cushioned walking surface, as opposed to cold, or hot, concrete or wood. This helps keep your feet both comfortable as well as safe. It also provides a bit of traction when it rains, preventing you from falling on what would otherwise be a slick surface.

Installation

This carpet requires no padding underneath; it can be adhered directly to the existing floor surface. The floor to which it will be applied should be smooth and dry. The carpet is best installed in moderate temperatures and a mild humidity. It can be attached to the floor surface with either double sided tape or glued down with an adhesive that is spread using a notched spreader.

Maintenance

Maintenance of your this kind of carpet is relatively easy. It should be vacuumed regularly. Spills should be cleaned up as soon as possible. Cleaning can be done with a bleach and water solution, but the bleach may lead to premature fading in the spots it is used. Special cleaners without bleach can also be purchased.

While these carpets are water resistant, they aren’t waterproof, and a buildup of water left in the carpet for too long can lead to mold or mildew. Direct sunlight can help address this issue, but if certain areas of your carpet don’t see very much sunlight, you should take extra care to ensure it dries thoroughly. All of these steps will ensure a long and happy life for your outdoor carpet.
