Carpet installation is a large process – literally. The entirety of your floor is being serviced, which means that it’s no easy task. Fortunately, there are ways to ensure that your carpet installation process doesn’t become a headache. Furniture, wall hangings, family members and pets may interfere with the carpet installation process. Before your new carpet is to be installed, you may want to prepare your home and any traffic areas for the carpet installation crew.

Here are six suggestions to help you prepare your home for carpet installation:

1. Remove all furniture, wall hangings and other fragile items from the rooms that are being carpeted, remembering to disconnect and label all wiring from TVs, stereos, and computers for easy reconnection.

2. Open your windows and doors to provide an adequate supply of fresh air to the rooms being carpeted. You may even want to turn on any ceiling fans in the house to aid circulation of the air.

3. It’s a good idea to remove any doors that lead from room to room in the carpeting areas, as the installers will have to carpet beneath and around all doors and door frames.

4. Get a head start on spring cleaning! Since your old carpet is coming up and out, this is a great time to wash the baseboards around your rooms.

5. Keep in mind that bedroom and closet doors may not freely clear the new carpet and swing as normal. It is not uncommon to shave or re-hang doors to meet the height of the new carpeting.

6. Plan to be at home during the carpet installation – as your installers may have questions that require your input – but make sure that all children and family pets are kept out of the work areas.

Note: In the months following your new carpet installation, you may notice some shedding, sprouting, pile reversal, or wrinkling of the carpet. All of these conditions are normal and will not affect the carpet’s life or beauty. Ask your Windows Floors & Decor representative about what to do in each of these occurrences.
