Having hardwood floors installed in your home gives any room a warm, welcoming feel. Hardwood is timeless, and never goes out of style. Not only that, but hardwood floors provide a unique touch, thanks to the variety of wood options available. The floors are easy to keep clean, sturdy, but soft enough as to not be hard on your feet and back. All in all, hardwood is an excellent choice for any home. But once you have your new hardwood installed, what about the rest of the room?
While hardwood can fit with just about any décor, the type of wood you choose can clash with the colors of your walls. In order to achieve the best effects and bring out the ultimate beauty of your hardwood, here are the best wall colors for your hardwood floors.
Light Colored Hardwood
Lighter shades of hardwood tend to be the most popular choice, and with good reason. One of the biggest advantages of lighter woods is that they don’t show most dust and dirt. Another major advantage is that they can make a room appear brighter, and even larger than it really is (which is great for smaller rooms). Light, neutral colors work best with light hardwood. White is always a classic choice, and makes the room look clean and neat. However, white can be too boring, or seem like an office, for most people. If this is the case for you, you can always use an off-white shade.
If you would prefer to stay away from any shade of white altogether, grey is another color that is both neutral and helps to enhance the beauty of your hardwood floors. However, unless you choose a true grey, grey has a number of undertones – pink, green, blue, red. The undertone of the grey can be seen when the shade is held up against a white background.
If you want to choose an actual color, aim for one that complements the undertones of your floor. Blues and greens work well with cool undertones while shades of yellow are great for warm undertones.
Dark Colored Woods
Dark colored hardwoods create a cozy atmosphere, and are an excellent choice for an open floor plan or larger rooms. They also work great in rooms with plenty of light. You will want to avoid any dark colors, as they can really close in the room and make it feel exceptionally small. Instead, opt for a cream color (for a sophisticated look), or a beige (for a more classic feel). If you want a color on your wall, the cooler blues and greens (in lighter shades) will add a beautiful touch.
Oak comes in two colors, white and red. Red oak pairs wonderfully with shades of yellow. Red adds boldness. Or you can choose to go with shades blue. White oak works well with pastels (and you can choose just about any pastel that suits your taste), or you can go dark, with charcoal walls. For a more formal room, match the walls to the color of the wood.
Cherry colored hardwoods create a rich look. As with light colored woods, white works wonders. In this case, however, it is a stark contrast to the dark wood. Contrasting cool colors can also be quite beautiful. Certain shades of green (such as sage) as well as lighter shades of blue can create a peaceful environment.
For a bolder look, you can opt to venture into warm colors for your walls, such as red. You may also choose to do three walls in a neutral shade and paint only one wall in the warm tone, to show off a certain area of the room.
When paired with the right wall color, hardwood floors will truly shine. For the best results, you should start with the floors and use that as the basis for painting your walls.
