Kansas City Porcelain & Ceramic Tile

If you’re thinking about redoing your bathroom or kitchen floor in tile, you might be surprised to learn just how many different options there are. It’s not quite as simple as picking the color or pattern you want and having your new floor put down. If you’ve never picked out tile before, understanding the basic types of tile will help you make your decision.

Porcelain vs. Ceramic Tile

Most tiles used in the bathroom and kitchen are classified as ceramic tiles. However, these tiles can be further divided into porcelain and non-porcelain tiles. What’s the difference? Generally, you’ll find that non-porcelain tiles are called ceramic tiles, which can make it even more confusing. However, these tiles are usually less durable than porcelain ones. They’re good for areas that don’t get a lot of traffic. They also have a very high water absorption rate, which means they’re not as resistant to frost.

Porcelain tiles, on the other hand, are much stronger. They don’t absorb water as easily, so they won’t be damaged by the cold. These tiles will hold up to more wear and tear than non-porcelain tiles, so they’re much better for use in the kitchen and bathrooms that get a lot of use. Note that most porcelain tiles are glazed. This helps them resist stains and other damage. Glazed tiles also come in a wide variety of colors.

Another option is stone. These tiles are very durable and look very nice. Marble, limestone, travertine, and granite tiles are all available and look great. Most stone tiles are strong and can handle the wear and tear, but some, such as travertine, can easily be stained.

Tile Rating – How to Pick the Right Tile

When you’re looking at tiles, you may see their PEI Class rating. This tells you how durable the tiles are. A Class 1 tile shouldn’t be used as flooring because they’re much too weak, while a Class 5 tile is ideal for home and commercial use because it can withstand a lot of damage.
